Overview

The Network Engineer is responsible for analyzing, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining and repairing of network infrastructure, applications, and server components.  These responsibilities are performed with the assistance and engagement of Operations to ensure the network performance meets agency and user satisfaction day-to-day.  The Network Engineer additionally provides training to Operations as necessary.  The Network Engineer also provides information and recommendations regarding network configurations, installations, design and support to management to ensure strategic goals are being achieved.  A high degree of latitude and independent decision making is expected to perform this function.  Appropriate project timelines are developed to ensure Operations and Deployment initiatives can be realized with minimal impacts to the network.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

 
Maintain a thorough understanding of the basics behind the Internet and it workings (DNS, Security, IP Routing, HTTP, VPN, Email Routing, SPAM, SSL, etc.


Configure and setup Firewalls, VPNs and Routers ensuring access to vital agency applications are protected.


Design, setup and configure complex switching environments including VLAN strategies and trunks.


Design, setup and configure complex wireless networking that supports open and secured access to applications.


Maintain a thorough understanding of Networking through seminars, trade journals, self-learning, etc.
 

Ensure network protocols processes are developed, maintained and operating at peak performance including IP schemes, DNS, WINS, DHCP, etc.
 

Assist in the configuring and installing client and server network software for upgrading and maintaining network.


Ensure multi-site network operations and software applications, operating systems and regular maintenance with both private and public facing hardware with the assistance of Operations are maintained.


Managing assigned projects and program components to deliver services in accordance with established objectives.


Respond to inquiries from staff, administrators, service providers, site personnel and outside vendors etc. to provide technical assistance and support as required in support of Operations.


Oversee the administration of systems and servers to ensure availability of services to authorized users.


Troubleshoot malfunctions of network hardware and software applications and other network applications as necessary to resolve operational issues and restore services.


Any other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and / or equivalent professional experience in a technical field.
  • Experience and working knowledge with: PCs, servers, printers, video, wireless, switches, routers etc.
  • Proven technical, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills with a focus on attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and timelines and independently shift work as necessary.
  • Ability to work directly with end users, contractors and vendors.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours to meet project goals.
  • Network Certifications, CISCO CCNA are required.
  • VMWARE Virtual Network certification is a plus.
  • Experience with CISCO NXUS and CLI iOS is desired.
  • VPN and Firewall standard methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate in an understandable, polite and friendly manner, both written and verbal to co-workers, users, contractors, vendors and service providers and management.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task in a small business environment.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license with no restrictions and possess reliable transportation.
  • Availability in response to needs of Operations for installation, maintenance and equipment malfunctions.
  • This is an ‘on-call’ job and requires 24x7 support as needed.
