  • Overview

    The OT will be responsible for performing initial evaluations on all patients being referred from the State Hospital campus to DePaul’s residential programs in the Community.  Once assessed and accepted for placement, the OT will work with the client and the residential team to develop a plan for helping the individual to succeed in their chosen community living environment.

    Responsibilities

    1. Perform OT evaluations/assessments for State hospital patients being targeted and referred to DePaul’s residential programs.
    1. Develop a specific care plan with the individual and the DePaul team which will work on the person’s needs and enhance their strengths, abilities, and interests in relation to their physical, social, and cultural environments.
    1. Serve as an active member of DePaul’s Risk Management Committee.
    1. To teach clients some of the skills outlined in the Care plan.
    1. Assemble and lead therapeutic groups designed to improve ADL skills and provide individualized interventions to assigned clients.
    1. Provide clients with opportunities for community integration, mobility training, and promote participation in social/recreational activities to assist in the skill building needed to transition to less restrictive living environments.
    1. Promote maximum independence by selecting and constructing therapies according to the individual’s physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest.
    1. Prepare clients to return to employment by consulting with employers for the purpose of determining potential employee’s difficulties, the need to retrain employees, and helping employers to understand necessary physical and job result accommodations.
    1. Provide necessary in-service trainings for staff and clients as needed.
    1. Completes necessary documentation in to the client file as per policy.
    1. Performs any other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the agency.

    Qualifications

    Registered Occupational Therapist (having passed the NBCOT exam) and at least 3 years’ experience in working with adults who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness.

    In addition to the above criteria this position also requires a clean NYS driving record as outlined in DePaul’s personnel policy.
