Overview

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) under the supervision of an OTR/L will screen clients, carry out treatment plans, and oversee progress of clients with the goals of living independently in the community.  In addition to individual treatments the COTA will create and run therapeutic groups to promote participation and independence within the client’s chosen communities.  They will also work with families and collaborate with related mental health professionals to provide an integrated team approach to the client’s care.

Responsibilities

  1. Perform screenings for potential or current residents at a DePaul residential program.

  2. Assists the Occupational Therapist in evaluations of the level of function of the client.

  3. Assists in developing a holistic, client-centered treatment plan to facilitate skill building that allows the client to be as independent and empowered as possible.

  4. Use evidence-based interventions with assigned clients to assist them in achieving their goals.

  5. Assemble and lead therapeutic groups that promote skill building, community integration, social participation, and occupational wellness.

  6. Evaluate and adapt the client’s environments to promote their optimal level of functioning.

  7. Observes, records, and reports any changes in the client’s condition.

  8. Educates the client / family and agency personnel in use of equipment and therapeutic techniques.

  9. Complete all necessary documentation as set by the program’s policies and procedures.

  10. Respects and maintains resident confidentiality and demonstrates a caring, positive attitude toward all residents (as per the respect policy), staff, family members, guests, and service providers.

  11. Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor or agency.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited occupational therapy program, certified by the National Board for Occupational Therapy, and be licensed as a certified occupational therapy assistant in the state of New York.  Experience in a mental health setting is preferred but will except entry-level knowledge of occupational therapy practice in mental health.

 

In addition to the above criteria this position also requires a clean NYS driving record as outlined in DePaul’s personnel policy.
